Can you tell me when will some of the Keystone West Station Improvements start to be updated on this website. IE - Tyrone, Latrobe, Johnstown.... The central and western side of the state are just as deserving of the Commonwealth's time, attention and money. Especially, seeing some riderships levels exceed the amounts from stations that have already recieved money, upgrades and are completed.

Right now getting to State College is hard - if you don't want to drive the best option is probably a two-hour bus ride from Harrisburg. There are closer Amtrak stops (Lewistown from the east and Tyrone from the west) but Greyhound only operates one bus per day between those places and State College. In both cases it leaves before ths train arrives and returns after the train has already left.

Could you ask Greyhound about trying to time State College - Lewistown and State College - Tyrone bus service to better serve Amtrak passengers? Maybe this problem will go away when the second train to Pittsburgh is added, but to the naive observer changinf the Greyhound schedule looks like a basically cost-free way to improve transportation options to State College.

I am a senior undergraduate working on my capstone engineering project and I was hoping to get more information surrounding the Middletown Station construction. From the 2010 design/implementaiton plan, it was shown that a south parking lot would be constructed in addition to the north. In the proposed configuration doc from 2018, the south side parking lot is no longer seen and the north side paring lot has been expanded. Were the plans for the south side lot scrapped from the original proposal? Any information regarding this decision would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks in advance.

This concerns the train horns used for Amtrak’s construction work at the Overbrook Interlocking on the Harrisburg Line in Philadelphia, PA for the “Plan the Keystone” project. There are four major problems and, in my view, one easy solution.

Problems:

1. My understanding is that the train horns that sound near Merion Station run afoul of federal regulations. Both the Amtrak trains and especially the local trains typically sound their horn between 40 seconds and one minute before reaching the construction zone, which is far outside the legal limit, as stated in the FRA safety manual: “locomotive engineers must begin to sound train horns at least 15 seconds, and no more than 20 seconds.” The construction zone is located 2 miles from the whistle posts. I’ve stood near the construction zone when the trains honk and I could not even hear the horns, even though the horns are blasting at 110 decibels. That’s how far away the whistle posts are from the construction zone. I am not a lawyer, but this appears inconsistent with federal law.

2. The horns are a serious health risk for people who live in the neighborhood, who are awakened throughout the night and then can’t function during the day due to sleep deprivation. The whistle posts were put in place in March 2020, so the constant horns began 2.5 years ago and have been unrelenting ever since. This is not just a quality of life issue. Rather, 2.5 years of constantly interrupted sleep is a long-term health issue as well.

3. The volume and frequency of train horns is completely excessive. The horns are constant throughout the day and night and they sound right next to homes. The sound reaches our house at 100 decibels at 2am in the morning and at many other inconvenient times. Even when Amtrak employees cover the whistle posts with black bags (which is rare) to prevent the local trains and overnight maintenance vehicles for sounding their horns, the Amtrak trains continue to sound their horns beginning at 6:30am and continuing until 10:50pm. Most of the time the horns continue for 24 hours with no interruption. This is completely unnecessary and excessive.

4. Amtrak has exhibited a lack of transparency and accountability. I conducted several weeks of research before buying a home in the area to ensure that there was no risk of horns sounding near us. This included scrutinizing all available government documents and calling Amtrak and being promised return calls that never came. It also included learning about the federal law and knowing that if Amtrak ever did begin construction at the Overbrook interlocking, the train horn zone would not be near our house. I have searched online everywhere and called them multiple times, and Amtrak provides no information on why they appear to be violating federal law and how long the horns will continue. They continue to obscure and withhold information when it is requested. Amtrak needs to be held accountable.

Proposed Solution

To solve this problem, please consider the following solution. All Amtrak would need to do is move the whistle posts south by a half mile so that they are closer to the Overbrook Interlocking. This will locate the whistle posts within the federally designated safety zone. It will make the first horn audible to construction workers, increasing the likelihood that they will hear it. It will also locate the whistle posts next to a park that is unoccupied at almost all times rather than in a dense neighborhood. Amtrak will be within federal regulations and avoid undermining the safety and quality of life of people who live in the area.

This email is therefore a request to Amtrak to move the whistle posts to meet federal safety regulations and stop the Amtrak and Septa trains from sounding their horns at Merion Station. I would also like to make a Freedom of Information Act request that information be given on (1) the precise date of completion of the Plan the Keystone project, (2) when the whistle posts near Merion Station will be removed, and (3) when all Amtrak and Septa trains will cease sounding their horns at Merion Station.

The wifi really needs to be better on Amtrak (which I know is not a PA state agency, but they're more likely to listen to you than to me). The airlines all figured it out so it can definitely be done, and there's no way to spend money on networking gear that even compares to the cost of building tracks. Slow (or moderately fast) trains are a lot more palatable to people when they can connect to the wifi and work on board. This is low-hanging fruit for increasing ridership IMO.

I was looking over the Keystone West improvement study and couldn't help but notice the suggestion on page 5 of the Menu of Options about building a new, straight alignment to avoid the Horseshoe Curve outside Altoona. It's notable for two reasons: (1) the time savings is enormous - eight minutes, more than any other proposed improvement; (2) per second saved it's actually one of the cheaper projects proposed, far more so than any of the proposed curve straightenings or addition of a third mainline track. That it is more cost-effective than adding another mainline track is notable because paying to add another mainline track to relieve congestion in Altoona is precisely the condition Pennsylvania recently agreed to for a second daily Amtrak train to Pittsburgh.

Presumably Pennsylvania balked at building a detour around the horseshoe curve instead because such a project would be expensive, but with large amounts of one-time federal infrastructure funding now available it may be time to look more seriously at solving this centuries-old transportation bottleneck. If properly implemented (say with a tunnel under the spine of the Alleghenies instead of a passenger-only bypass) Norfolk Southern could also stand to benefit from a Horseshoe Curve bypass, potentially by eliminating the Altoona helper district altogether and solving the associated congestion problem permanently.

I hope you'll at least consider the matter.

What ever became of the plan to build a station at Paradise connecting to the Strasburg Railroad and serving the local Amish community (who are reliant on trains for transportation over any serious distance) without requiring them to take a risky trip all the way into Lancaster?

I was in the area today and found the lack of access via Amtrak to Strasburg to be utterly bizarre for a tourist area with a huge population not possessing cars. I hope you'll look into building a station there; as far as I can tell previous plans were abandoned due to the 2008 financial crisis, but now federal infrastructure money should be available.

I'm a daily commuter who lives in Philly and works in Lancaster, where I'm a professor at Franklin and Marshall College. I rely on the Keystone service, as do a couple  dozen of my colleagues and lots of people who work along the keystone corridor. Curtailing all morning commuter trains other than the 5:20am and 6:20am makes my commute impossible. Several of my friends have been forced to remain remote (especially if they have children who rely on them to get to school in the morning) or have purchased cars -- not a good thing for traffic and global warming! Trains are essential for us in our effort to return to work. Please bring back at least on of the two other morning trains (7:25am or 8:56am) please!

Good afternoon,

According to your website the new waiting room at the Exton station has opened. However I would like to know when the waiting room is open for customers (it was locked when I was waiting for my train to New York the other night). Amtrak and SEPTA do not have anything regarding station waiting room hours at Exton posted to their websites.

Also the new station is turning out great!

Illogical there is no SEPTA service to Philadelphia beyond Thorndale.  Amtrak service is deplorable, & SEPTA more reliable local service, to take to intermediate stations, such as Wynnewood, as well as Downtown and up to other SEPTA destinations.

I ride the train every day from Mount Joy to Paoli. I like the history photo board at Paoli. Photo attached. My son would like to do something similar at Mount Joy as an Eagle Scout project. Any chance service will be expanded to Downingtown from Suburban Station later than 10:37? It only goes as far as Malvern for the late trains. When will we start providing service like a major city?

Was looking for any information on the status of the Coatesville station project. Wanted to know if there are any dates at this time for when you bidding documents will be available, or even any expected milestone dates (ie bid dates, expected construction time lines, architect involved etc). Your Plan the Keystone website for the Coatesville stations reads: "The historic station building (closed for more than 25 years) is in need of major renovations and does not meet ADA accessibility requirements. "
This suggests there is currently no train station, please add:  though the building is closed, the station still functions as an Amtrak train station.
